Justify the title browning version

The title 'Browning's version' is first a direct reference to the fact that the text is an adaptation of Agamemnon's tragedy written by Aeschylus. It means that the text is an adaptation by Robert Browning of the original. Mr Crocker Harris is betrayed, like Aeschylus, by his wife. The betrayal may vary in intensity and kind, but the underlying theme is the same. The author, Browning, too had suffered a loss: the death of his wife that had an impact on his personality and his writing. Similarly, the reader realises Crocker Harris's character has also suffered a change due to his wife's betrayal. There could be a play on the word 'version' in this respect too: the protagonist is a changed version of his original self.

Version' is very significant,

because it associates with Robert

Browning's translation of the

'Agamemnon'.

• Throughout the play, Andrew

slowly begins to revive from the

'dead corpse' he was originally.

• Andrew's emotions that had been

hidden become much more visible

towards the end of the play.

• Whereas, in the Greek tragedy,

'Agamemnon' it concludes with a

climax of a dead hero, Whereas,

'The Browning Version' terminates

with the main character

re-awakening and becoming a

new person, this is shown when

he says 'I shall be staying here

until I got to Dorset' this shows

that Andrew has made a decision

about their relationship and has

been able to accept that his

relationship with Millie is a failure

and will now continue life as a

single man.
