Oscar Wild's 'Canterville ghost' ghost is the story all about the ghost of Sir. Simon de Cantervilel. It starts with the clash between the American minister, Mr. Ottis's family and the ghost himself.
The first half of the novel is a hilarious account of the confrontation between the ghost and the family members, who refuses to be cowed by the ghostly tricks of the ghost. It deals with the ghost's antics to terrify the family. Each time, when his plans backfire, the ghost is reduced to a frustrated bundle of nerves. He even falls sick. This part of the novel offers great fun to the reader.
But the second part reveals the pathetic story of Sir. Simon's life and death. The readers are moved to sympathy for the hapless Sir. Simon who was killed mercilessly by his brothers-in-law and fated to haunt his own house and scare its various occupants and his acquaintances. The way he died evokes great pity and the reader is happy and relieved when at last, due to the efforts of little Virginia, his soul is put to rest.
In short the whole book is the story of the Canterville ghost. the main character which occupies the reader's mind is the ghost and the rest of the characters are just in supporting roles.
