Electronic media effective for fostering positive change around gender-based violence in South Africa

Gender-based violence is the cause of thousands of deaths in South Africa every year and remains a significant issue in the country. It is important for the media to report on it in a way that’s accurate and sensitive, in order to better educate the public and help bring awareness to the issue.

Towards the end of November, South Africa’s Media Development and Diversity Agency (MDDA) hosted a virtual masterclass on effective media reporting on gender-based violence (GBV), in the lead-up to this year’s international 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign.

The event was hosted in partnership with Global Citizen, the Government Communication and Information System, Wits Radio Academy, the German Development Cooperation (GIZ), and UN Women, and was open to all local community journalists, producers, and media creators to attend.

  • Social media offers unprecedented opportunities to raise awareness around violence against women and girls, to help users stay safe and to inspire people to engage in social activism. At the same time, it may pose challenges to journalists by blurring the line between journalism and activism.
  • The original studies showed that almost all the media surveyed looked for sensational stories that would sell, and were inadvertently therefore cooperating in promoting a discourse that reinforces violence against women. This propaganda trivialises and legitimises behaviour that is not regarded as an attack on human dignity, and conveys surreptitious messages which as a whole help to build up a discourse of terror that prevents victims from denouncing the violence they have suffered.
