Disadvantages of early approach of length measurement in comparison with the modern devices, are as follows -
- In the early days, the length was mostly measured by our own body parts or body activities. Eg. a length of one foot was considered as the distance covered by one step during a walk, a length of one inch was considered by the width of our thumb.
- Apart from the above mentioned approaches, the length of the hand and the length of the forearms, are also used as different length measurements.
- Now, the biggest problem with such length measurements, is the huge amount of error in the final measured value and lack of universality.
- Width of thumb, distance of a step, length of hand or forearm can be different for different persons, and thus the magnitude of a same amount of length becomes different for different persons. So, there was a serious problem of lack of universality.
- But, in the modern devices, we can precisely measure different lengths, and the measurement aspects are universal, as the measuring divisions of the measurement devices are strictly similar in everywhere.
