कोई वस्तु सजीव हैं, इसका निर्धारण करने के लिए हम सजीव को उसके अंदर उपस्थित जीवन से पहचानते हैं, जबकि जीवन को उसके कुछ विचित्र , विशिष्ट तथा मौलिक लक्षणों के आधार पर पहचानते हैं।
सजीवों के कुछ महत्वपूर्ण लक्षण है जैसे - उनमें जीवन की उपस्थिति, पोषण की आवश्यकता, श्वसन क्रिया, जनन वृद्धि आदि।

The conditions to identify whether an organism is living or not are as follows :
1. We should see that the organism shows certain metabolic processes like nutrition , assimilation .
2. If the organism respires then we can easily say that it is living .
3. The organism should perform vital life processes .
4. The organism should perform movement or locomotion .
Hence these are the characteristics of living organism.
