% of candidates failed in mathematics= 40%

% of candidates failed in English= 30%

% of candidates failed in both subjects = 10%

Now,

% of candidates failed in both subject = (% of candidates failed in mathematics + % of candidates failed in English)- % of candidates failed in both subjects  

= 40% + 30% - 10%

= 60%

Since, total % of student should be 100%

Now,total % of students in the exam= % of candidates failed in both the exam +  % of candidates passed in the both exam

    => 100% = 60% + % of candidates passed both exam

   => % of candidates passed both exam= 100% - 60%
