Direct speech -

Kanika said to Suresh, '' Is the tea ready?"

Indirect speech -

Kanika asked Suresh if the tea was ready.

Note-

  • Direct speech is always enclosed within inverted commas('')

  • When the direct speech is an assertive sentence, then the conjunction 'that' is used to introduce the reported speech.

  • When transforming a sentence from direct to indirect speech, the tenses of finite verbs, personal pronouns and adverbs of time and place change.

  • Tenses and adverbs of time and place are determined by the time of reporting, i. e., the tense of the reporting verb. The reporting verb itself remains unchanged, as does the person who is reporting.

In sentence 1, you have repeated your teacher's exact words. In order to make it clear that you are repeating the words actually spoken by the teacher, they are put within Quotation marks ("... ..."). This method of quoting someone is called Direct Speech or Narration.

In sentence 2, you have put in your own words what the teacher said. This method of quoting someone is called Indirect Speech or Narration.
