Answer:

Kanyasulkam :-

It is the practice of marriage for money which was practiced in olden days among the people of upper castes especially the brahmins.

Poor people who are in need of money ,marry their pubescent daughter to a rich old man for money. This barbaric culture was common in India before independence as most of the people were uneducated and poor filled with greed. Many people fought to stop this culture and because of their efforts it is almost extinct in India but some unofficial cases are heard now and then. Gurjada Appa Rao was the Pioneer from Andhra Pradesh, tried a lot to stop the grieving act by stage plays and books. But what happen by this act ?

Some bad affects of kanyasulkam are :-

  • It forces the bride to marry unwillingly.
  • Parents are forced to marry their daughter or else they are threatened for life or property.
  • Money is given to the parents for marrying their daughter, which makes the parents cruel and selfish.
  • The bride and her parents undergo depression.
  • Sometimes it forces the bride to take her life.
  • If the old husband died after marriage, she can't marry again.
  • Death of the husband(old) leaves the wife alone to lead her life like the widow.
  • The bride's opinion is not taken into consideration as she is too young.
  • Health issues arise due to unwanted pregnancies.
  • Bride is not emotionally and physically grown.
  • If the bride's parents don't agree, they may be let to die in poverty. This fear forces the parents to perform the act.

Hope it helps
