Let the number be x

$(x - \frac{2}{3} )6 = 5x$

$6x - \frac{12}{3} = 5x \\ 6x - 4 = 5x \\ 6x = 5x + 4$

cancelling 5x from both sides

that is

$6x - 5x = 5x + 4 - 5x \\ x = 4$

therefore the number she thought is 4
