Three possible reasons could be :-

• Kartik's mind must be wandering in some other thoughts. He might be present there physically but mentally absent which might have led to the slip off of the knife and as a result his hands were introduced to a cut.

• He might be chopping vegetable for the very first time. It must have been a very new experience for Kartik. We all tend to make mistakes while doing things for the first time, same might have been the case with him too.

• He might have been angry as his mother would have forced him to chopp vegetables and out of anger he might have cut his hand deliberately just to get rid of the work (xD) [considering Kartik a child ]
