Let the total pages of the book be x.

Fraction of book read on the first day : 3/8 of x

Fraction read on the second day : 2/5 of x

Pages left : 48

Equation →

 \frac{3}{8}x +  \frac{2}{5}x  + 48 = x

 =  \frac{31}{40}x + 48 = x

 \frac{39x + 192}{40} = x

 = 39x + 192 = 40x

 = x = 192

Hence, the total pages of the book are 192.
