King Ashoka wanted to conquer the whole country. Ashoka expanded the Mauryan empire to reign over a realm stretching from present-day Afghanistan in the west to Bangladesh in the east.

It covered all parts of the Indian subcontinent except the areas of present-day Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala. The capital was Pataliputra (present-day Patna).
