Tongues have numerous taste buds on its surface which act as receptor cells and responds according to the taste of the food that falls on it.

According to the tongue or the taste map, the major tastes – salty, sweet, sour, and bitter are sensed at different parts of the tongue.

Salty and sour taste is sensed at the sides, sweet at the tip, and bitter on the back of the tongue.
