Answer:

Lactic Acid when heated with iodine and Caustic Soda gives positive iodoform (B) test.

Explanation:

  • The iodoform test is used to determine whether carbonyl compounds of the R-CO-CH3 structure or alcohols of the R-CH(OH)-CH3 structure are present in certain unknown substances. The reaction of iodine,  base, and  methyl ketone produces a yellow precipitate with a "preservative" odor. It also tests positive for some specific secondary alcohols containing at least one methyl group in the alpha position.
  • When iodine and sodium hydroxide are added to  methyl ketones or compounds containing secondary alcohols containing a methyl group in the alpha position, a pale yellow precipitate of iodoform or tri-iodomethane is formed. It can be used to identify aldehydes or ketones. If an aldehyde gives a positive iodoform test,  it must be acetaldehyde, since it is the only aldehyde with a CH3C=O group.
  • CH3−COH−COOH + I2 + NaOH = CHI3 +  NaI + H2O + RCOONa
