ladder reaches the window which is 12 m above the ground on the side of the street. keeping its foot at the same point the ladder is turned to the other side of the street to reach a window 5 metre high. find the width of the street if the length of the ladder is 13 m​

1st case, at the side of window with the height of 12 m ,

Height of window = 12m

Height of ladder = 13m

By the Pythagoras theorem,

Length of Base on the road = √(13^2-12^2) = √25 = 5m

Similarly in 2nd case, on the other side,

Length of the base on the road = √(13^2-5^2) = √144 = 12 m

Then, width of the road = 12 + 5 =17 m
