Laterite is both a soil and a rock type rich in iron and aluminum and is commonly considered to have formed in hot and wet tropical areas. Nearly all laterites are of rusty-red coloration, because of high iron oxide content. They develop by intensive and prolonged weathering of the underlying parent rock.

The word Laterite in Latin means 'Brick'.

They are formed under conditions of high temperature and heavy rainfall with alternate wet and dry period. The heavy rainfall washes away top soil containg Silica. This process is called Leaching.

They are rich in Iron but poor in magnesium, phosphoric acid, and potash.

Due to intensive leaching, Laterite soil lack in fertility but respond readily to manuring and irrigation.

Laterite soil are suitable for plantation crops like tea,coffee,rubber, coconut etc.

They are found in Karnataka,Tamil Nadu, Andhra pradesh, Telangana and parts of Maharashtra, Kerala,Bihar, Odisha and Jharkhand.
