on squaring both sides

 {(x -  \frac{1}{x} )}^{2}  =  {3 }^{2}  \\  {x}^{2}  - 2 +  ({ \frac{1}{x} )}^{2}  = 9 \\  {x}^{2}  +     \frac{1}{ {x}^{2} }  = 7
