Let us talk about poetry. You must have read many poems in your language classestill
now. But do you know what is poetry? There are different definitions of poetry given by
different people. Let us see what the great writers and thinkers had to say about poetry.
Aristotle-rhythm, language and harmony
Shakespeare-couplet: two lines poetry that usually rhyme
Wordsworth-spontaneous overflow of powerful emotions recollected in
tranquility
Keats - sensual imagery
TS Eliot- poetry is not turning lose of emotions; but an escape from emotions. It
is not the expression of personality but an escape from personality
• According to Encyclopedia Britannica. Poetry is a type of literature, or artistic
writing. That attempts to stir a readers' imagination or emotions. The poet does it
carefully by choosing and arranging language for its meaning, sound, and rhythm.
Some poems, such as nursery rhymes, are simple and humorous.
Now read the first poem in your text-book, Fire and Ice.
Fire and Ice
Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.
By Robert Frost
Do you think this is a poem? Which of the above-mentioned definitions would it
fit into?why/why not?
