Our ability to solve present and future problems depends on our ability to question the world in new and creative ways. With our knowledge of the world growing so rapidly, we must move away from having our children simply memorize facts. Computers can do that much better and more efficiently. Instead, we must emphasize the thinking skills that can put those facts to use, and create organization for new facts as they emerge.
What better opportunity for a child to develop such skills than to participate in his or her school’s science fair! The thinking skills a child develops while doing a science fair project are the same basic skills he or she will use daily throughout his or her life – to identify and clarify problems that exist, and to find creative solutions to those problems. During the fifth grade year, all students are now tested over basic science concepts learned from 2nd grade through 5thgrade. Learning the scientific method through experimentation is much more effective than worksheets.
Please encourage your child to take part in this year’s science fair if they are in 1st and 2nd grades. If they are in 3rd through 5th grade, participation is mandatory. Children should select projects that match their interest and abilities. The science fair experience should be FUN for your child – something he or she really wants to do. We want the children to feel a sense of accomplishment in completing a project that they did themselves. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher or Jenna Twiner. Thank you for your continued support
