To the Times:When you think of global warming, often images of melting ice caps and polar bears come to mind, but extreme precipitation, not as much. However, that is exactly what is happening as global temperatures rise. With an increase in temperature, more water evaporates from waterways, fueling larger, wetter storms.Delaware County experienced this trend about a year ago, when Hurricane Irene struck in late August dumping over 5 inches of rain. Darby Township witnessed the worst of it when Darby Creek overflowed, leading to road closures and extensive flooding. The flooding caused a building to collapse while roads were impassable. What's worse is that the frequency of these larger, more intense storms has increased by 52 percent in our region since 1948, according to Penn Environment's report entitled "When It Rains, It Pours." This report released a year after Irene and (Tropical Storm) Lee doused the area, explains how global warming is leading to an increase in extreme weather events. Our policy makers need to use this new data to inform their decisions and enact tougher limits on the pollution causing global warming. Our environment and our wallets cannot afford the destruction caused by extreme weather.SARA CLARKPenn Environment InternPhiladelphia

The Editor,

Subject: Solutions to Global Warming.

Sir,

Through the columns of your esteemed daily newspaper, I wish to highlight the danger and solutions to global warming.

Global warming is the phenomenon of the increase in the temperature of the atmosphere due to the presence of excessive green house gases. Global warming will results in melting of the polar ice caps and raise in the ocean level which will submerge islands and coastal lands. Global warming is a reality but there are remedies too.

Planting more trees will reduce the amount of the harmful carbon dioxide gas in the atmosphere and reduce global warming. We need to use alternative energy instead of burning of fossil fuels like coal and petroleum products. Burning of fossil fuels increase global warming and also deplete the ozone layer which protects us from the harmful effects of UV rays of the Sun.

Proper treatment of industrial waste before they are dumped and using renewable energy, electric, hydro and solar energy will help us to reduce the danger of global warming. Urgent steps must be taken to reduce exhaust emissions from motor vehicles, power plants, factories and industries. Global warming needs global action to save and preserve life on Earth.

Yours sincerely,

RAMESHWAR
