letter to editor on education for all

One front-page story in the Jan. 31 edition of the Morning News concerned the problems of Florence District School Four. Our state superintendent of education warned that the district could be stripped of its ability to give diplomas. I do not understand how preventing a student from receiving a diploma is going to solve anything.
It seems that the only option discussed is merging District Four with District One. What definition of “merge” is being used? District Four should be dissolved, and all of its administrators dismissed. They have failed to accomplish their task.
I have lived in 12 states and had children or grandchildren in school in several of them, including South Carolina. The educational problems are nationwide. Most indicators say that the problems in South Carolina in general and in Timmonsville specifically are more severe than in most other parts of the country. I am not familiar with the District Four specific problems, so I will stick with problems in general. I feel qualified in this area, because I am a graduate of the U.S. Navy’s Instructor School and was a successful instructor in both the Navy and in the electric utility industry.
Get politics out of education. The federal government and state governments make regulations that cost money to implement and document. This money could much better be spent on classrooms and teachers. The “No Child Left Behind” program is a waste of money. It does not recognize people’s differences and has been an abject failure.
Quit buying into unproven systems. Our children are not guinea pigs.
