Subject: Immense amount of money spent on Puja Pandal and decorations
Sir:
I am writing to express my deep concern over the issue of undue squandering of national wealth in so called religious festivals. It has been observed that money and resources worth millions of rupees are squandered unnecessarily over glitz and gimmicks, which in realty are not desired by God or deities; they are the expression of people’s or organizers’ intentions.
I just wonder if the same amount or money is spent in improving the environment, installing garbage treatment plants in the cities and towns, won’t it be true and ideal worship of God? After the festivals are over, huge amount of pollution, waste, and garbage is left in their wake. Recently I saw a religious Pandal on which millions of rupees had been spent.
I am not commenting on any specific religion; people belonging to all religions and faiths indulge in such practices. I appeal to people and Government to look into it and do something in stopping this squandering of money in glitz and gimmicks in the name of religion. The same amount can be spent on charitable, and other projects for the welfare of the poor and the society.
Kindly give my views some space in your esteemed daily.
Yours truly,
Upen Vashisht
