Sir, — I do not agree that old age homes are the need of the day (Letters, Nov. 8) To say they are needed because the joint family system has collapsed or we have accepted the Western way of life is incorrect. The truth is most of those who live in such homes do so because they live alone.

Old age homes are helpful only when parents become sick and immobile and their children cannot be beside them. In normal circumstances, the old age home concept should not be popularised among our youth.

Subject: Condition of Old People in Old Age Homes.

Dear Editor,

The issue I want to highlight today is the condition under which senior citizens of our society are living under in Old Age Homes. Children who have abandoned their parents in these homes do not know how bad the conditions in these homes might turn out to be.

Recently, our school took us on a tour to an old age home; viewing the conditions of the seniors has left me in awe and regret. We as active citizens of the country have failed to provide livable conditions to the elderly.
