In the days of women enfranchisement a lady was loitering on the Mall on the wrong side of the road.
When asked to correct herself she asserted that she now enjoyed liberty. She was told that if a coachman were to exercise a similar right she would be trampled to death.
Liberty does not mean license. It implies discipline. If one claims the liberty to blow one’s bagpipe loudly at the dead of night in a certain quarter, the citizens can rightly claim the privilege of sleeping soundly without being disturbed by bagpipe or any other noise. True, liberty does not cross the fundamental rights of others.
The progress from barbarism to civilization is really a voluntary surrender on the part of human beings of some of the liberty in their own larger interest.
When the horse was troubled by the stag, he sought the shelter of man who put a saddle and bridle on the horse, and killed the stag. The horse was now secure but not before he had lost his liberty.
Young boys often indulge in acts of indiscipline and take it to be an expression of liberty. They should know that these acts will invite stern punishment and liberty which they love so much may be completely lost.
