"The Blue Bead" is set in the small village of Gujar, where everyone is poor. The main character is a twelve year old girl called Sibia. Her family is extremely poor, and cannot afford to buy even a new needle for her. In itself, being able to survive amidst poverty is also a struggle.

Next, we come to know that the women of the village sell paper grass to make a living, but to collect this grass they have to cross a river full of crocodiles. They have no definite measure to make sure the crocodiles will not pose a threat to them. They simply make loud noises to scare away the beasts. Later in the story, Sibia saves a woman from being eaten by a crocodile, and also displays extreme presence of mind by doing proper first aid on her bitten leg.

The story is an ode to Charles Darwin's 'Survival of the fittest'. Only those with excellent smarts and skills are able to survive testing environments. Sibia is a wonderful example of an independent, street smart tween, who knows exactly what and what not to do. However, at the end of the day, she is a child with a desire for a necklace like all the other women in her village, and it is pleasing fact that she finds a pierced blue bead at the end of her efforts.
