The name of this cursed immortal man is Ashwatthama. Lord Krishna had given him this curse.

After the end of the Mahabharata war, Ashwatthama first killed Dhristadyumna, the commander of Pandava army and the killer of his father Drona, then he killed other Pandava warriors, including Shikhandi, Yudhamanyu, and many other prominent warriors of Pandava army. He then entered the Pandava camp. The Pandava sons were sleeping in the camp where the Pandavs were supposed to sleep. Lord Krishna was aware that the Pandavas would be attacked by Ashwatthama. Hence, instead of allowing Pandavas to be in the camp he drove them away somewhere else. Ashwatthama killed the Pandava sons. After killing the warriors and Pandava sons he fired the Brahmastra at the Pandavas and Krishna. Arjun also fired the Brahmastra at him. The impact of those two Astras terrified all omniscient beings, so, one of them, Ved Vyasa interfered and asked them to call back their weapons. Arjun knew about how to call back the weapon because he had learnt all those from his teacher Drona, and he called back his weapon, but Ashwatthama couldn't because he was never taught how to. So, he did something unthinkable. Unable to take back and still looking for revenge and a way to wipe out the Pandava linage, he directed his weapon at Uttara who was pregnant with the child of Abhimanyu. The weapon hit her womb, but Lord Krishna intervened in time ensuring the Astra didn't kill but merely transferred its powers to the fetus.

It was this terrible act of Ashwatthama to use the deadliest weapon on an unborn child that made Krishna angry. Ashwatthama was asked to surrender the gem on his forehead. Krishna then cursed Ashwatthama for 3000 years that he will roam in forest with blood and puss oozing out of his injuries and cry for death.
