Question :--- Light enters from air to glass having refractive index 1.5. what is the speed of the light in the glass? (speed of light in vacuum is 3 x 10^8 ms- ¹)

Solution :---

Given :-

  • Speed of light in vaccum ( or air) = v1 = 3 x 10^8 ms- ¹
  • Now, we also know, refrective index of air = R1 = 1
  • Refractive index of glass is given, R2=1.5

Formula used :--

  • (R2/R1) = (V1/V2)

Putting values now , we get,

(1.5/1) = (3 × 10^8)/V2

→ 1.5 * (V2) = (3 * 10^8)

Dividing both sides by 1.5 now,

V2 = 2 * 10^8 ms- ¹

Hence, Speed of light in glass is 2 * 10^8 ms- ¹ .
