Plants have Structural, Chemical and Protein-based Defenses to protect themselves from Predators.

Plant Defense Mechanisms are:

  1. Thorns - They are pointed modification of stems or branches that protects the plant from being eaten by Herbivorous Animals.
  2. Bark - Plants have rough stem made of dead cells which makes them unattractive to Herbivores.
  3. Sensitive to Touch - Plants like 'Touch Me Not' close their leaves on slightest touch mimicking their movement to insects, thus protecting themselves from Herbivores.
  4. Double layered Cell-Wall - Plants have two cell walls that protects it from sap sucking parasitic insects and plants.
  5. Chemical Defense - Some leaves secrete poisonous chemicals like glycol cyanide which causes numbness in the mouth of the animal that eats it, thus protecting itself.
  6. Wax coating on Leaves - Some leaf surfaces have waxy coating making it difficult for the animal to digest it, thus defending itself.
  7. Plants close Stomatal pores to prevent the entry of Pathogens.
  8. When Bacteria attacks Leaves, Plant cells react defensively by killing the surrounding plant cells, thus isolating the Bacteria. In such cases, the dead plant cells fall off from the plant. We can see this as 'Shot-holes' on Leaves.
