This statement is made in the context that like a rose can be easily distinguished from other flowers by its fragrance, a man should also do something or achieve something different than others so as to make his own identity.
A person in order to stand out from the crowd needs to do something different and out of the league to make sure that everyone knows him for what he has. Just like the fragrance of the rose, a person shall have something different in him and something that defines him.
