Lila and her friend, Sal, walk toward each other on a straight road. Lila is walking her dog, Dyson, at a constant rate of 300 ft/min. Sal is walking at a constant rate of 250 ft/min. When Sal and Lila are 825 feet apart, Dyson gets excited and breaks away, running toward Sal at a constant speed of 440 ft/min. As soon as he reaches Sal and touches his nose to Sal’s hand in greeting, he turns and runs back toward Lila. Similarly, when he touches Lila, he instantly runs back to Sal. Dyson continues to run back and forth until the two friends meet each other. How many feet did the Dyson run back and forth?

Answer:

660 ft

Step-by-step explanation:

speed of lila= 300 ft/min

speed of sal = 250 ft/min

resultant speed = 300+250

= 550 ft/min

distance between them = 825 ft

time taken to meet each other

= distance/speed

= 825/550

= 3/2

=1.5 min

for this 1.5 min dysan keeps running at a speed of 440 ft/min

so, distance covered by dysan in this time

= 440*1.5

= 660 ft
