linear pair of angles are always supplementary. But supplementary angles need not form a linear pair. why?

linear pairs of angles are always adjacent, i.e. they share a same vertice and a same arm. Supplementary angles on the other hand may or may not be adjacent.... like the opposite angles of a cyclic quadrilateral are supplementary, but not a linear pair.
