x² - 2x - 16 < 0
use quadratic rule for factorisation,
{ x - ( 1 + √17)}{ x -(1 - √17)} < 0
( 1 -√17) < x < ( 1 + √17)
hence, x² - 2x - 16 is negative when , x € ( 1-√17, 1 + √ 17 ) see graph
