in water molecules are arranged in a definite pattern which results in the formation of an open cage like structure with lots of vacant space due to which its density is lesser than of water .hence, ice will float on water.

Density of ice is less than the density of water. The low density of ice can be attributed to the small pores it was which allows it to trap air.Hence ice floats on water.
