• Hydro-electric power generation:- Rivers in their upper courses, with steep gorges and waterfalls, provide natural sites where hydroelectric power stations can be set up.

• Irrigation:- This was one of the earliest reasons why our ancient civilizations were developed in river valleys. Even today, irrigation canals are developed which are fed by the main streams.

• Transportation:- Inland water transport is based highly on rivers. There are national waterways in India for example.

• River Tourism:- River attract tourists due to their scenic beauty and the number of adventure sports they support. Boating, fishing, swimming, bird watching, canoeing etc are few. In India, rivers also own religious values.

• Fertile alluvial plains and intensive agriculture:- Every year rivers bring very fertile alluvium and deposit it on the floodplains during flood. These floodplains are highly fertile and therefore are one of the most densely populated regions in the world. Many deltas are equally very fertile and support a large number of crops. For example- Ganges delta, Nile delta etc.

• Fresh-water Fishing:- It is an important economic activity along many rivers and lakes.

• Political Boundaries:- Rivers also work as political boundaries between countries. For example- Mekong river serves the purpose of boundary between Laos and Thailand.
