Answer:

Protein has many roles in your body. It helps repair and build your body's tissues, allows metabolic reactions to take place and coordinates bodily functions. In addition to providing your body with a structural framework, proteins also maintain proper pH and fluid balance.

Functions of protein

Protein perform many functions in living organisms, some of them are as follows:

Enzymes :

\bigstar Most enzymes are built up of proteins alone or in conjugation with some non-protein materials called cofactors. Enzymes catalyse all the chemical reactions that occur in the living world.

Example - Trypsin (present in the pancreatic juice)

Defence proteins :

\bigstar Immunoglobulins or antibodies are proteins that fight infectious agents. They are produced by a type of white blood cell called B-lymphocytes.

Hormone :

\bigstar Some hormones are proteinaceous in nature, for example insulin, regulates the sugar metabolism.

Receptor :

\bigstar Receptors are protein molecules which occur on the external surface of cell membranes.

\bigstar Receptors are also located in the sense organs like nose and tongue for detecting smell and taste respectively.

Transport proteins :

\bigstar A number of carrier proteins occur in the cell membranes for transporting specific materials to the inside. GLUT-4 is a carrier protein that enables glucose transport into cells.

\bigstar Some carrier protein like haemoglobin present in the RBC transports oxygen from lungs to various part of the body.

Collagen :

\bigstar Collagen is the long fibrous structural proteins and has great tensile strength. It helps to main component of cartilage, ligaments, tendons, bone and teeth. It is the most abundant protein of the animal world.
