To keep in mind just you have know basic elements ON.
As
H is at intermediate so it can be +1 with nonmetals and -1 with metals.
H= +1,-1 it depends
O= -2,-1,2...-2 is generally used.
Among group 1 , 2 and 3
ON is always +1,+2,+3 respectively for all elements.
ON of 17th group elements is -1.
just some of these is always used and just keep this much in mind others u can find by the compound formula.
eg. For MgCl2
Mg is of 2nd group so it has +2
Total charge is zero.
so Cl will be -2.
