Answers
Exposure of the lung tissues to fibres such as those from asbestos dust in cement factories results in a deadly medical condition known as pulmonary fibrosis.
It is characterised by a sudden shortness of breath, wheezing and coughing up of blood. Prolonged exposure to such fibres results in accumulation in the alveolar region of the lung. The fibres begin to accumulate and squeeze the lung cavities and tracts. If it is not treated on time, it might lead to pulmonary asphyxiation and eventually death.
Long exposure and accumulation of fibres in the lung tissues can lead to a problem called pulmonary fibrosis.
EXPLANATION:
The 'alveolar region' of the lungs gets affected because of the exposure and accumulation of fibres in the lungs.
The lung tissues become damaged and scarred in pulmonary fibrosis. The accumulation of fibres makes it difficult for the lungs to function in the required manner. Pulmonary fibrosis leads to 'shortness of breath'.
