The environmental impact of mining includes erosion, formation of sinkholes, loss of biodiversity, and contamination of soil, groundwater and surface water by chemicals from mining processes

The three harmful effects of mining can be given as:

(1)Soil Pollution

(2)Deforestation

(3)Destruction of animal habitat

Explanation:

Mining is defined as a process of 'extraction of minerals ' from the earth. Mining operations usually have a huge negative environmental impact.

Some of these effects can be listed below:

  • Soil Pollution- In the process of extraction of these minerals, sometimes large amounts of the layer of soil are processed. A lot of chemicals used during this process tend to stay in the soil and contaminate it.
  • Deforestation- The effect of deforestation is largely seen in the world today. A large number of trees are cut down each day for the process of mining. This has an adverse effect on the flora and fauna too.
  • Destruction of animal habitat- As stated above, deforestation for mining leads to an imbalance in bio-diversity. When trees are cut down the natural habitat of animals is hampered hugely.

In short, mining can be quite harmful to the environment but we can't ignore the useful side of mining.
