. Fishes are aquatic , poikilothermal (ectothermal ) , scaly vertebrates.

. The scales are mesodermal :In some fishes they are modified into shields or spines.

. Vertebrae are amphicoelous , having a cavity on each side of centrum .

. Fins are present for locomotion.

. The fins are paired (pectrol and pelvic ) and median (dorsal ,caudal and anal)

. Gill are respiratory organs.

. Gill slits are open in cartilaginous fishes and enclosed by operculum in bony fishes.

. The heart is ventral and two chambered ,it is also called Branchial heart and Venous heart .

. Meninx primitiva is the protective covering of brain.

. Lateral line sense organs detect pressure variations in surrounding water.
