Combine harvesters are in use in Ludhiana since 1971, and their popularity has been on the increase. The farmers have found the harvester advantageous in a variety of ways. Because only a portion of the crop is harvested by machine, the employment position, particularly for the local labour, has changed minimally. The demand for immigrant labour, however, has gone down significantly. If more combines are bought, local labourers, too, are likely to be affected. Since a substantial portion of their income is derived from harvesting, its loss can threaten their economic viability in the village context.
