- After independence, government of India took the territories under their control.
EXPLANATION:
- The Portuguese were first to find a sea trade route to India when Vasco da Gama reached Calicut in. After that, they started controlling the sea areas around Goa and the islands if Daman and Diu.
- From the very start of their colonial rule in this area they faced many challenges in the form of local rulers, first Vijaynagara empire wanted the control over Goa because it was an important trade route, then after the rise of Maratha kingdom, Portuguese were forced to surrender some of their areas.
- After British established their rule most of the trade went to them and Portuguese were left alone.
- All these were crucial for their decline but the final blow to their rule in India came after India got its independence and asked the Portuguese to leave the areas of Goa and Daman, when Portuguese refused the Indian army marched to area and Goa and the islands of Daman and Diu were finally liberated from the Portuguese and was integrated into Republic of India officially.
