Apparatus and materials required - copper wire, PVC - covered, 26 SWG, 50-100 cm with bare ends, plotting compass, power supply, low voltage.

Procedure -

a. Using wire strippers, bare approximately 3 cm of each end of the wire.

b. Connect the ends of the wire to the DC terminals (red and black) of the power supply.

c. Switch the supply on so a large current flows through the wire.

d. Hold the compass above and then below the wire. Observe how it orientates itself in each position.

Result - When an electric current is flowing through the wire, compass needles placed above and below the wire will point in opposite directions.

It means when current flows through a wire it produce magnetic field around the wire.

\bf\large\underline\green{Procedure :-}

  • Cut a 1 meter loop of insulated wire.
  • Use electrical tape to secure a stripped end of the wire to one side of a D battery.
  • Run the wire up one side of the box, across the top, and down the other side. ...
  • Connect the other open end of the wire to the battery so current begins to flow.

➤ Oersted Experiment. In 1820, Oersted established the relationship between electricity and magnetism. He concluded that a current carrying wire produces a magnetic field around it.
