The causes for natural resources depletion are modern human needs and wants.

But the ROOT causes have several layers. Let’s try to pill it off one by one to see if we can find the origine root cause.

Infinite Growth: our entire economical and social system is based on that idea… a bad idea indeed when natural resources are always finite. A whole ensemble of marketing strategies has been invented to power this idea of infinite growth. Before that, people were buying stuff because they needed them. Now we buy things because we want them even when we don’t need them. Fashion is considered the 2nd most polluting industry thanks to marketing. It is also the most un-necessary industry in the world and a symbol of the infinite growth ideology.

Power by the number: No matter what benchmark we hit in terms of population, there is never enough young people to take care of the older ones. Politicians, religious leaders, always tell us to multiply when the carrying capacity of earth for the anthropoid species, especially our kind should probably be 1/10 of what it is right now. The recipe is timeless and simple, more of your kind are born, more power you can claim, more privileges you can maintain for yourself and your descendents.

Control the water, control the world: We are starting to be historico-anthropologic, but most wars are wars of resources. While metal, salt, gold, food supply or oil these days are considered the object of these wars and conflicts, the control over these resources depends on the control over waters, either for logistic purposes or as a commodity.

Human nature: Centuries of experience in hoarding resources told us that it is the way to go if you want to be competitive among other humans. If you are apes level of intelligence, greed will not get you very far. But if you are human, capable to think-up tools of mass harvesting and destruction, then human nature becomes counter nature… literally. Dr. Hawking said it best “greed and stupidity will be our demise”.

Anthropocentric: We used to see our world from a biocentric point of view. With our capacities for adaptation and imagination we have become all powerful in our own eyes, putting ourselves right on the top of a virtual pyramid of values. Therefore, all our ideas and actions are focused on our own benefit, without a thought for other living forms. This is for me the root of the root causes… our shift to an anthropocentric mindset generating civilisation, colonialism, empire and cities. All these requiring a massive amount of energy and services to maintain, which require natural resources: commodities, animals and humans to power.
