1. Inadequate banking facilities- India being a developing country has a significant proportion of its population residing in the rural and the backward areas. These areas still do not have sophisticated and well-developed banking network. Consequently, the rural poor lack the access to the banks, hence, face difficulties in acquiring loans from formal credit sources.

2. Lack of collateral securities- Usually, the poor do not have assets (such as land, houses, gold, etc.), which can be used as collateral for acquiring loans. In addition, they also have low credit worthiness. As a result, the poor do not enjoy easy access to cheap loans.
