Reasons in favor of Sati Pratha:  

Though sati is a heinous practice there are certain instances that could be given as an example of an excuse for this practice.

And in such cases as well, the practice was carried out by women as a suicide ritual, in order to protect oneself from the inhumane treatment that awaited them at the hands of the invading armies.  

Reasons against Sati Pratha:  

As time progressed, Sati was associated with religion and culture and this practice transformed from a last resort for escaping tyranny to a cultural practice that resulted in forcefully burning women alive with the dead bodies of their dead spouse.

This became an inhumane practice that needed to be abolished and thus necessary steps were taken by the government to do so.
