list the defining features of the modern era. Why do Indian Historians not want to call the British rule in India a modern period?

because i think the mordern era meant of start of democracy in India and when people became the whole and sole of Indian gov. i.e. people elect there rulers and then the rulers are also not based on generation i.e. pm s son can not only became pm someone other than him or her can become the pm and it is same for all other gov. posts
