Difference between electronegativities of the reacting elements determines whether the bond would be ionic or covalent.
A small difference would result in covalent bond while a bigger difference would result in an ionic bond.
Electrons are shared between the elements in a covalent bond while in an ionic bond, electrons are transferred from elements with lower electronegativity (metals) to elements with higher electronegativity (non-metals... excluding noble gases).
The difference should be around 2 for an ionic bond.
