Tata Iron & Steel Co. Ltd., or TISCO, was set up in Jamshedpur as three important resources, that play an important part in manufacturing steel, were available in the close vicinity. Coal was available in the Jamadoba and West Bokaro regions of Bihar. Iron Ore was available in the Noamundi mines, close to Jamshedpur, both in Jharkhand (a part of Bihar earlier). Chromium Ore was available in the Sukinda valley in Jajpur district, in the neighbouring state of Odisha. Hence, a viable unit for manufacturing iron and steel was set up.
