Intellectual property (IP) is the term used to refer to creations of the intellect for which a monopoly is assigned to the designated owners by law. IPR or intellectual property rights are granted to the creators of IP, which include trademarks, copyright, patents, industrial design rights and, in some cases, trade secrets. In our country, the Indian Patent Office, which is administered by the Controller General of Patents, Designs & Trade Marks, grants copyright, patent and trademark to individuals or organisations. CGPDTM reports to the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), which is  under the union Ministry of Commerce and Industry. The CGPDTM has five primary divisions, viz. Patent office, Designs registry, Trademarks registry, Geographical indications registry and Patent information system.
