PARTS OF HUMAN RESPIRATORY SYSTEM WITH FUNCTIONS:

  • NOSE: It is the part of the body which initiates respiration. It takes oxygen inside our body.
  • Nasal Passage: The air taken inside from the nose passes through the nasal passage. It is lined by fine hairs which purify the air.
  • Pharynx: The nasal passage opens up into pharynx. It passes air to larynx
  • Larynx (VOICEBOX): It receives the air from pharynx. It also creates voice for speaking. Hence it is known as voicebox. It passes the air to trachea.
  • Rings Of Cartilage: These are half - c shaped bony structures which protect the trachea. When there is no air in the trachea, the rings of cartilage prevent it from collapsing.
  • Trachea: It receives air from larynx.
  • Bronchi: The trachea divides into two bronchi which pass air to the lungs and further divide into bronchioles and finally into alveoli.
  • Lungs: These are the main part for respiration. There are a pair of lungs in our body which receive de-oxygenated blood from the heart and breathe out. These are protected inside the ribs.
  • Alveoli: There are millions of alveoli in each lungs. These increase the surface area for respiration.
  • Diaphragm: It seperates the thoracic cavity from the abdominal cavity. It flattens and rests alternately.

Following are the sections of respiration system in humans :

1. External Nostrils

The function of this part is to serve as the passage to lead into the nasal chamber.

2. Nasal Chamber

Goblet cells present in this section produces mucus which helps in trapping the dust from the inspired air.

3. Nasopharynx

It serves as the way for the air to go to trachea.

4. Larynx

Acts as the way for passage.

5. Trachea

It helps in the passage of air to the bronchi.

6. Bronchi

From here the inspired air passes to the alveoli.

7. Alveoli

Exchanging of gases takes place in this part.
